02 / Mono-material

One technology. Multiple
packaging challenges

GL Film combines transparency with high barrier performance, helping packaging developers protect products while addressing changing production, usability and circularity requirements.

  • 01Extend product shelf life

High oxygen and moisture barrier performance helps protect sensitive products and preserve quality throughout shelf life.

  • 02Support mono-material development

Selected GL Film grades can be incorporated into compatible PP or PE structures, helping reduce mixed-material complexity and support more recyclable packaging pathways.

  • 03Enable demanding processing

Specialist grades are engineered to maintain barrier performance through demanding processes such as retort and other thermal applications.

  • 04Improve production compatibility

Transparent, non-metallic barrier structures can support requirements such as microwave use and metal detection where the complete packaging structure allows.

03 / Our Technology

TOPPAN’s Patented
GL Film Technology

GL Film combines a transparent base film with an inorganic vapour-deposited barrier and protective top coating. Together, they deliver high oxygen and moisture barrier performance while keeping the film transparent, lightweight and suitable for a wide range of packaging applications.

  • 01 — Durable base film

A transparent substrate provides the mechanical strength and heat resistance needed for the application. GL Film is available on PET and polyolefin substrates including BOPP and HDPE.

  • 02 — High-barrier deposition

An ultra-thin, transparent layer of aluminium oxide (AlOx) or silicon oxide (SiOx) is vapour-deposited onto the base film, creating a strong barrier against oxygen and moisture.

  • 03 — Protective top coating

TOPPAN’s proprietary coating protects the barrier layer, improving durability and helping maintain barrier performance through converting, handling and processing.

04 / Sustainability

A simpler path
to more sustainable packaging

GL Film can support simpler packaging structures by replacing conventional barrier materials such as aluminium foil in suitable applications. Selected grades are also designed for compatible PP or PE structures, creating pathways towards mono-material packaging.

For retort applications, GL-RP is TOPPAN’s SiOx-deposited BOPP barrier film designed for incorporation into all-polypropylene structures while maintaining the barrier performance required through processing.

Final recyclability depends on the complete pack and the collection and recycling infrastructure available in the destination market.
